Sept 21 -Map Making

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today in class we will begin discussing and examining the history of maps and then apply some of our understanding of cartography to the creation of a campus map.  Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objectives:

  • Read and digitally annotate a reading about the history of map making
  • Preview the criteria for a project through discussion and questioning 
  • Practice Google Apps functionality that will be used for the Virtual Campus Tour
Agenda:
  1. Critical Thinking: Reading -A History of Mapmaking (Google Classroom) 
    1. Read and annotate (take notes) on the following document. The first section is annotated for you. 
    2. Try to annotate using the margin provided and using the highlighter feature Use section titles to guide your reading! 
  2. Skill Building: Continue Virtual Campus Tour
    1. Get to know our campus! You will be researching where Rooms, Services, and People can be found around Leland. To do this you will continue using Google Apps and utilize Google Slides 
    2. Instructions/directions Use hard copy (paper copy) of the blank map and fill in the following locations on campus
    3. Take a selfie in front of these locations (you will use this later on your digital map)
    4. Get the school map template off the blog and use it as a template to start building the school map
    5. Create your digital map for the Virtual Campus tour with 3 slides (School Maps, Office Map)
  3. History Today Close
    • Prompt: Progress Check
    1. What work do you have left to do on your map? What is your plan for completing the project?
Homework:
  1. You need to be sure you have completed annotating the History of Mapmaking reading through the Navigators section (section begins page 5, ends at top of page 6)
