Sept 14 -Where in the World

Ladies and Gentlemen

Ms. Pershe will be with you in class today while I am at Yale University for the weekend. Today in class you will be doing an activity to practice the 5 Themes of Geography. This practice activity should be a fun way to use the skills of the 5 Themes in a practical manner. Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objectives:
  • Research an area of the globe and define it by its 5 Themes of Geography
  • Identify an area of the globe by analyzing the 5 Themes of Geography
Agenda:
  1. History Today
    • Prompt: Review 5 Themes
    1. Define the Themes of Location, Place, Region, HEI (Human Environment Interaction) and Movement
      1. You may choose to use the textbook to refresh your memory if needed before writing the definition in your own words. (pgs 38-42).
      2. Textbooks are located in the desk with the blue table number or you can view a digital copy of the specific pages through this textbook CH1, Sect. 1 link.
  2. Quick Read & Share 
    1. Read one of the two 5 Themes Readings 
    2. Answer the questions at the bottom 
    3. Find someone with the other worksheet and compare your countries 
    4. Stay with that partner and be prepared to describe the OTHER person’s country using the 5 Themes. 
  3. Guess Where 
    1. The teacher will read details for the 5 Themes relating to a specific location.
    2. Based on the information presented, guess the location
  4. Where in the World 
    1. You and a partner will be assigned a secret location (either a city, state, province or country) 
      1. The teacher has the locations for you.  You will choose your location by selecting it from the class period specific ziplock bag. Remember -Keep your location secret from your peers.  
    2. With your partner, spend approximately 40 minutes researching your location and completing the 5 themes for that location by filling in the information on the worksheet Where in the World -5 Themes Student Copy.
      1. One of the partnership will need to make a copy of the worksheet and share it with your partner.
      2. Each group member needs to specify a color for their text to identify which parts they contributed to the worksheet.
      3. Please share the completed worksheet with Mrs. Paulazzo
    3. Make a small poster of the five themes of your location (10-15 minutes). (Avoid the use of common images that are easily identified with your location)
      1. Use the provided paper and markers or colored pencils for your poster
      2. The teacher will provide you with the paper; markers are in the box in the desk with the green desk number.
    4. Where in the World Gallary Walk
      1. Place posters around the room and complete a gallery walk
      2. "Visit" each of the posters, trying to identify the location by its 5 themes. 
      3. Record your guess on the answer slip

    • Prompt: Galley Walk Debrief
    1. What was difficult about the gallery walk? What were the clues that allowed you to identify the secret area? What questions do you still have about the 5 Themes of Geography?
Homework:
  1. Study for Five Themes Quiz on Monday
    1. “Study” for this quiz means to review the definitions of each of the 5 themes including the sub-themes). You should be able to clearly communicate these definitions. 
      1. Note: review the definitions we covered in class from the PPT and your notes.  
    2. Also, be prepared with a specific example(s) for each theme, once again consider the examples we covered in class.
