Nov. 30 Research Workshop Day/Task 1

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Great to see you all again! Today in class we will be working on our Research Workshop Project in Google Classroom. 
This project will involve a great deal of academic effort and so it is imperative that you stay focused and do your best to get it done in a timely fashion. Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objective:

  • Complete a multifaceted project in which you identify source types, search for information, identify the plagiarized material, and practice proper citation.

This is a skill that you should be able to master with concentrated effort, it will also be a great asset to those of you who are planning on taking AP classes in the future (as many AP classes require some degree of academic research!). Nov. 26-Comparing Etiquette

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome and great to see you all today! I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! We are on the downslope to the end of the semester and I hope that everyone is ready and focused to finish strong! Today in class we will be taking the information we have been working with for the past couple of weeks and writing a comparative paragraph. This continues our year-long workshop on developing our writing skills. Remember that these are important to improve! I look forward to working with you all to get better! Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objectives:

  • Create a comparative paragraph that analyzes the similarities and differences of etiquette between two countries
Agenda: 
  1. History Today
    1. Prompt: Writing Variations
    2. How and why does the style of one’s writing change? Explain the purpose of different forms of writing and what those forms look like.
  2. Comparative Writing Activity -Google Classroom
    1. Create a new Google Doc 
      1. Format Document to Chicago Style
        1. Google Docs has a Chicago style template you can access that will already have the paper formatted for you
          1. This template is attached to the Classroom assignment.
          2. To use the template you will need to open the template in Classroom then File > Make a copy
        2. Follow File Name Protocol and use “EtiquetteComparisonParagraph” as the title of your document 
      2. Access PDF File with the paragraph template
        1. Resource: Compare and Contrast Paragraph Template
        2. Follow the template and use the red comment boxes to help guide you on how to best use the template
      3. Your grade for this assignment is on the quality of your paragraph and how well you utilized the template to construct your paragraph. Pay special attention to the comments on the template Mr. Thiemann made. This will help ensure you maximize the number of points you earn on this assignment.
    2. Writing: Comparative Paragraph
      1. OBJECTIVE = Write a compare and contrast paragraph that indicates the differences and similarities of etiquette between the country you researched and the etiquette of a country in a different region in the world.
      2. You need to compare the etiquette of the USA to that of the country you researched.
        1. You have a choice as to what three aspects of culture you wish to compare.
        2. Make sure to specifically mention which three of the Etiquette qualities you are comparing in your response. (Greetings, Dining, Family, or Misc.)
        3. Use the highlight tool to identify your evidence (this would be the details you use from your notes on the graphic organizer)
      3. HINT – As you write your paragraph, make sure to reread, revise, and change your paragraph to improve the quality of the writing
      4. After you finish… Use the comments feature to highlight and identify your 3 comparisons (ex. Greetings, Dining, Business)

Nov. 19 -Etiquette Project Gallery Walk

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Today in class we will be doing our Gallery Walk of your Etiquette presentations. You will need to use the graphic organizers to take notes on the different presentations. This information will lead us to write a comparative paragraph next week. Keep up the good work! Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objective:

  • Collect information that was created by their peers in order to write a compare and contrast paragraph
Agenda:

    3. FINAL ACTIVITY: Participate in a gallery walk in which students learn about the etiquettes of different cultures

      1. Setting up for the Gallery Walk
        1. Sit in the area that is designated for your country region

        3. Put your Chromebook in presentation mode 
      2. Gallery Walk: Etiquette

        2. Objective: Gather data about 10 different countries 2 from each of the 5 different regions in the world! 
        3. Knowing your task, you will have to move to different areas of the classroom to find your information. 
        4. Make sure that the Chromebooks remain in their places, only people can move desks 
        5. Require writing: Write in detailed information for the countries you visited from each of the 5 regions on the Etiquette Notetaking Guide handout
    5. Analysis of Etiquette: Whole Class Practice 
      1. Preparing for Comparative Writing 
        1. Make a T-chart to compare the customs of the USA and Mexico-OR- China 
        2. Brainstorm the etiquette for greetings, dining, and family 
        3. In your table groups, create a paragraph that compares these nations using the paragraph template and a separate sheet of paper. 
        4. All group members should be prepared to share your paragraph out with the class. 
        5. Resource: Compare and Contrast Paragraph Template Turn in the paragraph with ALL group members names on it.

Welcome and great to see you, beautiful people!  I hope that you are doing well!  Today in class we will be doing the third and final part of our cultural discussion on cultural interactions.  We will then have more time to work on our Etiquette Projects.  I am excited to see what you all produce!  Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.

Objectives:

  2. Examine the cultural practices of etiquette through online research and the creation of a digital presentation

      1. If you cannot find one online, maybe consider creating your own short video clip.
