Mar 8 -Guns, Germs, & Steel

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome and great to see all you beautiful people!  Today in class we will be watching the third episode in the documentary series based on Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond.  We then have a "game" to play about the colonization of Africa by the Europeans. Let's get down to business!  Below you will find our agenda.
Objectives:
  1. Describe the impacts of geographic luck and its modern-day impact on the continent of Africa
  2. Examine the extensive competition among European Nations for Colonies in Africa and the process of colonization.
Agenda:
  1. Guns Germs & Steel -Episode 3: Into the Tropics video (handout)
    1. As you view the episode, respond to each of the questions.
    2. Be sure to use facts, details, and examples in your responses. 
    3. Turn in the handout to black wite basket on the podium
  2. A Race for Colonies in Africa game
    1. You will play a game in which you assume the role of the various colonizers in Africa.
    2. Groups will be assigned one of the following nationalities: English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German or Italien.
      1. Review the map of Africa's natural resources and determine which areas you would like to claim for your country
    3. The game will be played in the following order:
      1. Portugal
      2. England
      3. France
      4. Germany
      5. Spain
      6. Italy
    4. After the land grab is complete, compare the land grab with the actual colonial map of Africa
    5. Discuss the following questions:
      1. How closely does your map reflect what actually happened?
      2. Why did certain areas take the areas they took?
      3. What enabled some countries to take more than others?
      4. What might have happened to the people who were living in these areas?
      5. What do you think the future results of this imperialism in Africa may be?
  3. Work time
    1. Use this time to work on completing any of the outstanding assignments you have from the Africa unit
