Mar 13 -Intro Genocide

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today in class we will be finishing our discussion on Africa's history (if we need to) and then we will be doing a scavenger hunt regarding the Rwandan genocide! We will spend a bit of time looking at the Rwandan genocide because it is one great example of the political and social damage that Africa is suffering from because of its history with European colonization. We will be watching the film Hotel Rwanda next week! Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.
Objectives:

  • Discuss the history of Africa, regional characteristics, and impacts of Europeans
  • Be able to define, describe, and explain the term “Genocide” and global examples.
  • Investigate the context of the Rwandan genocide and the people/groups involved through a digital scavenger hunt

  2. Defining Genocide
    1. We will be using this definition in our course: "The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation"
  3. Genocide When & Where Activity (Group)
    1. Before we begin to study the Rwandan Genocide from 1994, it is important to build our own understanding of Genocide and it’s horrendous examples from history.
    2. Choose a timeframe and location to focus on
      1. *Note* you may not choose the Holocaust (you will study this in 10th grade) or Rwanda (we will be studying this)

        1. Explanation of WHY your specific event took place
        2. Timeline with at least seven SPECIFIC DATES with descriptions
        3. Three STATISTICAL data points
        4. Lastly, what has been done to reconcile or remember this event?
      2. Product: 1 Google Slide show your findings (think infographic)
        1. Follow file naming protocol for slide
        2. Use Group # for name

    1. Part 1
      1. You will receive a number (1-15)
      2. You are responsible for reading the information on the page number that corresponds to the number you are assigned (Rwanda Scavenger Hunt Resources)
      3. Take notes on binder paper of your reading
        1. Your notes should be similar to annotations (who, what, when, where, why, how, main ideas, key details, vocabulary...etc.)
    2. Part 2
      1. After reading and taking notes (on binder paper) you seek out people to answer questions on your worksheet (Rwanda Scavenger Hunt Worksheet)
      2. You will have answers to only one or two of the questions, but you will seek help and help others for the others.
    3. The goal is to talk to other people and learn through oral communication
